Nourishing Ojas Milk

This sweet, spiced milk has nourishing and building qualities, which help to build ojas. Ojas, in simple terms, is our immunity, strength, and stamina. During the cold, dry, winter months, heavier, building foods can be an excellent medicine. This recipe is also useful for people in their wisdom years or during times of stress and general depletion.

This recipe uses cow milk, but fresh almond “milk” or another nut or grain “milk” is a good alternative, especially if excess kapha is present.  For folks who tend toward congestion or slow/damp digestion avoiding cow milk can be helpful.  Since I do not consume much dairy, I always make mine with homemade almond milk (recipe coming soon!), and omit adding the extra almonds.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup **raw or non-homogenized, whole cow milk
  • 8 almonds, soaked, peeled and chopped
  • 2 dates, chopped
  • 1/8 tsp. ginger
  • 1/8 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp. cardamom
  • Optional: nutmeg, turmeric, saffron, ghee

Preparation

1. Place all the ingredients in a saucepan.
2. Simmer for 3-5 minutes, stirring intermittently.
3. Blend the mixture for a creamy texture or drink as is.
** You'll notice that the recipe specifically calls for raw or non-homogenized, whole cow milk.  Raw cow milk is not always easy to find, and if you are not able to find raw milk, or feel wary of using it in general, I suggest buying non-homogenized cow milk, which can be often be found in the grocery store.  This option is often pasteurized, unlike raw milk, but not homogenized.  The homogenization process makes cow milk more difficult for the human body to digest.
