Sliding Scale

Payment System

I offer a sliding scale payment system as part of my commitment to working toward economic justice and solidarity as a daily practice. The sliding scale is a living example of my values, and the world I want to live in. It is a disruption of business as usual, and it requires your thoughtful participation in the process.

FRESH

For Revolutionary Economics & Social Healing

In order for this system to work, it requires you to take an honest look at income and wealth, along with a variety of other factors that dictate ones' economic stability.
The sliding scale offers space for all of us to consider how class, race, gender, and the many other varying points of privilege we each hold affect how we be and move in the world, particularly in regard to money. It asks that we look at the way in which we place value on goods and services.

Participating in this kind of payment system can also be an opportunity to consider how you care for and value yourself, by thinking about where and how you spend money, and where and how you might be reluctant to spend money.

What IS and IS Not

Sliding Scale Is

Sliding Scale Is Not

  • a practice of solidarity and reciprocity
  • based on honesty, accountability, and community care
  • an opportunity to consider the difference between sacrifice and hardship
  • a way to bring justice, equity, and humanity into a capitalist, classist, racist, and sexist system
  • a discount or sales incentive
  • a handout or charity
  • a way to pay less for something you actually can afford
  • monitored or judged by an authority figure when practiced within a framework of mutual respect, compassionate accountability, and community care
  • meant to be easy or mindless

The Three Financial Commitment Options

Below are some things to consider when deciding which financial commitment feels best for you today. While it appears that the focus is on you in the bulleted statements below, please keep in mind that this is all about community care, which includes you (and me) as one member of the collective. The idea is not that every statement will be true for you in a given category or that will find yourself exclusively in one list or another. My hope is that by reading through these considerations, you will be able to self determine what feels right. Your choice of financial commitment will not be questioned. Within a culture of trust, honesty, generosity, and accountability, you make that decision for yourself.  I trust you to decide, and I am honored to be in practice with you.

Standard

Receive Assistance

Offer Assistance

This is the “true cost” of a program or service. It allows me to pay my business expenses and receive a modest income for the time, energy, and experience I bring when holding space for you and the community. We guarantee you an exceptional experience with flexible learning paths and professional guidance.

Consider The Standard Or Offer Assistance Options If You:

  • are comfortably able to meet your basic needs such as food, housing, transportation, and health care
  • have expendable income to regularly spend on luxuries such as restaurants, coffee shops, bars, concerts, movies, sporting events, in-home entertainment, new clothes, books, hobby supplies, and the like
  • travel for pleasure and/or easily take time off of work
  • own a home or ability to rent a higher-end house/apartment
  • own or lease a vehicle
  • have savings, retirement accounts, investments, or inherited money and/or have access to these resources in times of need through family or community
  • work part time or are unemployed by choice, including unemployment due to full time school in a degree-earning program
  • have a relatively high degree of earning potential due to formal education, class background, racial privilege, gender, etc., whether you currently choose to access this potential or not

This is an offer of assistance and solidarity with folks who are unable to pay the standard cost. Your participation is valuable, and I trust that you will select this option after honest consideration for yourself and the community as a whole.

Consider The Receive Assistance Option If You:

  • have trouble meeting your basic needs such as food, housing, transportation, and health care
  • have little expendable income for luxuries such as restaurants, coffee shops, bars, concerts, movies, sporting events, in-home entertainment, new clothes, books, hobby supplies, and the like
  • have necessary medical expenses not covered by insurance
  • qualify for public assistance programs
  • are unable to find or keep paid work due to mental, emotional, or physical illness or disability, do not qualify for or are unable to apply for public assistance programs or government funded disability benefits, and do not otherwise have access to financial support
  • do not have savings, retirement accounts, investments, or inherited money and/or have access to these resources in times of need through family or community
  • have immigration-related expenses, experience discrimination in finding work due to immigration status or language barriers, or are unable to access public assistance due to immigration status when you would otherwise qualify
  • are the sole financial support for children or other dependents and have limited financial resources
  • are an elder with limited financial support
  • are an unpaid community organizer, activist, aid worker, or volunteer with limited time for paid work and are not otherwise financially secure
  • are returning from incarceration and experience discrimination in finding work, unable to accrue savings due to loss of income while incarcerated, or have fines/debt related to your incarceration
  • are descended from enslaved people or Native American Indians (this is one small way for me to participate in reparations)

This option covers the “true cost” of a program or service, and supports the ability of Stable In Self to offer assistance to those who need it. A humble redistribution of wealth is part of the greater work of economic justice and solidarity.

Consider The Receive Assistance Option If You:

  • resonate with several points above, and simply need more support at this time
  • have significant debt that prevents you from meeting your basic needs such as food, housing, transportation, and health care
  • are unemployed or underemployed for reasons other than choice, and have no or limited access to financial support from family or community
  • do not have stable housing, are un-housed, or insufficiently housed for reasons other than choice

Reflection

Considering Your
Financial Commitment

When honored respectfully by all those involved, this system offers all of us to be compensated fairly. I am compensated fairly when you select the payment option that truthfully fits your financial reality. You are compensated fairly by being able to participate fully, while offering a reasonable financial commitment based on your life circumstances without judgement. We are all compensated fairly when we work together for the benefit of all beings by offering extra support when we can, and being willing to receive support when we need it. Ethically guided financial redistribution is a form of community care that helps all of us to thrive together.
