Cool The Body, Cool The Mind

The Swirl Of Fire & Water

Marketing Spot

Out east, out west, north or south, wherever you are are, it is warming up. As we move into the summer season, more than just environmental temperatures are rising, and I need to be mindful of keeping cool in body and mind.

One way that I keep myself cool, clear, and grateful is by going out for an early morning stroll, being with water, listening to the birds, and feeling the dawn air on my skin. I spend more time indoors or resting in the shade in the middle of the day. I go back out as the sun moves lower on the horizon, repeating the morning practice.

My constitution carries a fair amount of the fire element, making me sensitive to heat. As the macrocosm around me gets hotter, so too does the microcosm of my own mind and body. I can become “hot-headed” and irritable if I am not careful.  I become irritable when I am too hot, and not able to make well balanced decisions. I might get a headache, a rash, or have a flare up of inflammation internally and/or on my skin.

This time of year, I eat cucumbers every day. I make tea with hibiscus, rose and other cooling herbs, and enjoy it cooled to room temperature instead of hot. I use cooling coconut oil, in food and on my skin. If I feel an excess of heat rising within the body-mind-spirit, I drink aloe vera juice to help cool, cleanse, nourish, and hydrate. Changing my diet and lifestyle routines to fit the season is a simple, yet powerful form of self-care.

Grief is present for me as I think about our world, and sometimes the tears are hot with anger. I grieve the massive amount of suffering caused by all the walls and borders that exist on land and within the minds and hearts of the humans. I feel a swirl of anger and deep grief, and I wonder if I even want to try to cool it.
I embrace the gifts of the fire element so as to learn from it, and allow it to transform the way I be and act in the world.
This hot, fiery emotion, can serve as a necessary catalyst. And also, I need the cool, nourishing gifts of the water element to allow the anger to become something useful. This is the essence of pitta dosha. Fire, with just enough water so that it does not burn itself up.

I pay closer attention to my water intake in the hot season, and be sure that I stay well hydrated. I have seen what real dehydration can do to a human body. Though access to clean water should be a right, sadly it is a privilege that many on this planet do not receive.

And so, with every glass of water, I offer gratitude for this day, this life, this blessing. May all beings have enough to drink. May the fire that burns within and without transform the microcosm of ourselves and macrocosm of the world, and may it always be accompanied by cool, nourishing water.
